NEW YORK – Walmart is testing a store that will only offer self-checkout.
The retailer is removing cashiers and standard conveyor belt lines at one of its popular superstores in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Workers will still be available to help customers who have trouble doing the checkout themselves.
Depending on the success of the test run, Walmart could expand the program to more stores.
The retailer recently launched a touch-free payment system also aimed at helping mitigate the spread of the coronavirus.
Health officials ordered the closure of a Walmart in suburban Denver in April after three people connected to the store died after being infected with the coronavirus and at least six employees tested positive.
Don’t like it. Always go to the check out with a real person.
If this happens here you won’t see me shopping at wal-mart anymore. I enjoy the cashiers and get to be friends with a lot of them. I have noticed a change of attitude in a lot of the cashiers where I shop and suspect it is because of them losing their jobs to self check. I mainly shop for grocery items at a store close to where I live but there is other stores that have cashiers that are fairly close also and they will be getting my business if they change it to self check here. WAL-MART will lose business.
Hope the people in whatever store they try this in boycott the store. Corona virus my eye, it’s just another cost cutting measure to pay fewer employees whilst making the customer scan, bag, and be inconvenienced by having no service provided. Unfortunately there are so many caveats that require an employee: alcohol, paint, cold meds, glue all require you to be over 21 and submit your ID to the computer for tracking. Covid hoarders and limited supplies won’t allow you more than one package of anything from paper towels, cleaning/disinfectants, or medicines. Retail therapy used to be fun. Now just trying to get what you need is a nightmare from hell. I’m not about to self check anything until I am getting a paycheck from the company or a discount at checkout for doing the cashiers job.
I do not work for Walmart. therefore I will not use a self check out. I will shop somewhere else.
so if it becomes that way all over,i’ll quit shopping there,no problem!
You don’t save enough to unload your cart. Then check it out. Then bag and put back in the cart. You can’t ring up some items because it locks up the system. You wait for help making people behind you mad.????
No no no unless you pay me to do that job
I was at a Walmart in Evansville, IN. There were about 12 self checks and only one with a cashier. What is a handicapped or older person suppose to do? When they start that business, I will say goodbye to Walmart. I was always a big fan of Walmart, but this would kill it for me.
People need jobs! How about you giving up your salary and helping your employees out. Just remember that without them your nothing.
Extremely bad idea, we are taking away work from the most vulnerable in this country. Our youth and younger generation will suffer greatly.
We always go through a check out with a real person, and get the best results
Wal Mart is a Communist Corporation lathered by the Communist Government of China!
Geez-O-Pete…what a horrible idea. Can you imagine the disaster? The general public is not that skilled in anything aside from filling up a grocery cart. I would avoid this store all costs. In fact, Amazon probably likes the idea. More customers for them.
